The idealism and enthusiasm of the youth was transformed into fresh and original marketing strategies by six students who were recently conferred Agora Youth Awards for 2009 by the Philippine Marketing Association (PMA).

Among the Agora Youth awardees are: Yasser Eli Almeda (University of the Philippines-Visayas), Justin Ivan Kingsu(University of Asia and the Pacific), Anna Katrina Recto (De La Salle University-Manila), Sarah Marie Santos (De La Salle University-Manila), Elinor Malicdem (De La Salle University-Manila), and Patrick Mabilog (University of the Philippines-Visayas). Recto was chosen Valedictorian for this year’s batch.

Other finalists for the marketing case competition are business and marketing seniors from the Asia Pacific College, Polytechnic University of the Philippines, and Lyceum College of the Philippines. The finalists were each required to present a comprehensive marketing plan for Mang Inasal, a rising quick service restaurant. Mang Inasal is also an Agora Awardee of the Philippine Marketing Association.

The board of judges led by Adrian Eleazar of Mang Inasal, Maeyeth Cadungog, Jojo Ajero and Jaime Siybauco of the PMA Board were impressed with the very competent and interesting strategies and creative materials presented by the students.

At the same time, five schools competed for the annual AGORA JUNIOR MARKETING ASSOCIATION OF THE YEAR. They are UPJMA (UP Diliman); CYBL (Bulacan State University); the Marketing Society (UP Visayas); JEMS /Mindanao State University – IIT and the JEMA (DLSU Manila). The representative teams presented marketing campaign for the 2010 AGORA YOUTH PROGRAM of the PMA.

UP Diliman Junior Marketing Association and UP Visayas Marketing Society emerged as winners. The winning teams received prizes from Mang Inasal, National Bookstore, Anvil Publishing, Vitwater, Shutzen notebooks and Piknik.

Gwenn Jessica Galvez, Vice-President of PMA’s Youth and Academe Committee, remains confident about the robust future of the marketing industry, given that there are many bright and analytical young minds who continue to participate in the prestigious Agora Youth competitions. “We believe that (the awards) are the best platform to launch these talents in the industry and a virtual lens through which companies can peek into the hearts and minds of young. We hope that we can encourage more colleges and universities to participate in the competitions so that their students can have a feel of the demands and challenges of the marketing profession.”

Furthermore, Dr. Nick Fontanilla, PMA President and himself an educator, firmly believes in excellence in marketing education because he has seen the tremendous potential of students who are passionate about sharing their ideas and armed with skills to make a great impact in the marketing field. “I think the awards’ objective to provide an opportunity for students to test their knowledge in developing actual marketing plans actualizes the PMA’s mission of service to the academe ,” he said.

“Students need to be inspired and motivated to face challenges early and they are certainly not lacking in creativity and energy to meet these demands,” Fontanilla said.

The Philippine Marketing Association’s Agora Youth Program is an annual series of competitions open to all marketing majors and students of related courses. The 2010 Agora program will commence in July with a tour of 12 schools that will showcase the winning cases in the previous competitions and will offer seminar on marketing and brand management to students. Interested schools may contact the PMA secretariat at tel. nos. 6345722 for inquiries and reservations.
